Activist Najee Ali Founder of the Muslim Democratic Club of Southern California and founder of the Muslim American Heritage Month resolution proposal. “Stated this resolution which our organization requested lawmakers to introduce was initially sponsored by Congressmember Karen Bass(D-CA) and Senator Cory Booker(D-NJ) and is now being reintroduced at the federal level. The establishment of Muslim American Heritage Month started with a vision from Imam Warith Deen Mohammed.
Muslim Americans have contributed to the society of the United States. It was a goal for Imam Mohammed to make sure those contributions were acknowledged and respected. We are proud to be continuing his work and legacy.
In 2014 Ali spearheaded an effort for Muslim Heritage Month to be observed in the city of Los Angeles. Its passage was unanimous by city council members. Ali was also successful in having Muslim American Heritage Month observed by Los Angeles County and the state of California. Since then, similar resolutions and proclamations have been adopted in Illinois, New Jersey, Utah, Virginia, and Washington, where Muslim-American Heritage Month is celebrated.
